SMASH is a nonprofit organization established in Spain, whose main goal is to enrich culturally our society through contemporary classical music. Since 2006 it has become one of the most important specialized institutions in this area in Europe, due to the variety of activities and artistic projects hybridized with the classical music of nowadays.
Bertrand Chavarría-Aldrete is Founder and Excecutive/Artistic Director.
Our global view allows an intense exchange of live artistic creation between Spain and the rest of the world. The three main transmission devices that help us fulfill our mission and objectives are:
:: SMASH ensemble
Considered as one of Europe’s finest formations, SMASH ensemble is a “cluster” comprising top musicians for all over the world specialized in contemporary music. The artistic direction has developed it’s repertoire and creations towards hibridations with different trends such as poetry, bunraku puppets, electronic music, philosophy, and a series of pedagogical projects aimed for children. SMASH ensemble has performed in Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Russia and Sweden.
:: Festival Internacional SMASH de Música Contemporánea
Born in Salamanca in 2006, the festival took place for seven consecutive yearly editions and moved in 2013 to San Sebastián-Donostia. Since then, it has become a prestigious communication platform linking philosophy, education and music. Composers like Helmut Lachenmann, José Luis Torá, Gérard Pesson, Ramón Lazkano, Brian Ferneyhough, Manuel Hidalgo or Rebecca Saunders have been the main subject of past editions paired with lecturers like Pilar Carrera, Katy Bernard, Fernando Castro Florez or David Mauas. Ensemble Intercontemporain, Aleph Gitarrenquartett, Proxima Centauri, L’instant Donné and Ensemble Machetes are some of the guest groups that have performed.
